How Zepbound works

Zepbound activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors involved in appetite, satiety and glucose regulation. It is injected once weekly and escalated gradually. The 2.5 mg starting dose is for initiation rather than maintenance.

SURMOUNT-1 reported average reductions of approximately 15%, 19.5% and 20.9% across the studied 5, 10 and 15 mg doses at 72 weeks among adults without diabetes. Individual response varies, and greater dose does not guarantee a better personal result.

Who might benefit?

An eligible adult with obesity or overweight plus a weight-related condition may be considered. Zepbound also has a separate indication for moderate-to-severe OSA in adults with obesity. Selection may be influenced by diabetes risk, cardiovascular factors, amount of weight reduction needed, prior response and coverage.

Side effects and contraindications

GI effects are common during escalation. Important issues include gallbladder disease, pancreatitis, dehydration, kidney injury, severe gastrointestinal reactions, hypoglycemia with certain diabetes medicines, pregnancy, oral-contraceptive guidance and planned anesthesia. Zepbound is contraindicated with personal or family history of MTC or MEN 2 and should not be combined with another tirzepatide product or GLP-1 agonist.

Important: Prescription treatment requires an individualized evaluation. Eligibility, product, formulation, dose, pharmacy availability, FDA status, insurance coverage and total cost vary. Weight-loss medicines should not be used during pregnancy. Do not start, stop, combine or change a medicine without the prescribing clinician.
